Most growers start the grow process by planting seeds. There are several different types of seeds and tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of different strains. On this page we will go over how to get seeds, the top seed banks, and the different types of seeds.

How To Get Seeds

When I first decided I was going to grow cannabis, I had no idea where to get seeds. A quick Google search resulted in an overwhelming amount of results. I quickly found out that the safest, most discreet way to get cannabis seeds was to buy them through a seed bank. However, I also quickly found out that there are hundreds of scam websites posing as reputable seed banks but will actually just collect your money and not send you anything!

“Is buying cannabis seeds from a seed bank safe?”

Yes, it is. As long as the seed bank is known to deliver the order. I’ve filtered through the hundreds of seed bank websites and narrowed it down to the Top 3 Seed Banks. These seed banks have a high reputation to not only deliver cannabis seeds, but deliver them on time, discreetly, and be excellent genetics. Scroll down on this page for a list of cannabis seed banks.

Types of Seeds

If you go shopping for seeds then you are probably going to find several categories of seeds and you might not be sure what those categories mean. In this section, we will quickly go over the various seed categories – Feminized seeds, Regular seeds, and Autoflower seeds.

Feminized Seeds
Feminized seeds are the most common category. These are seeds that are going to turn into females if you grow them. Growers generally want female cannabis plants since they produce the most THC and buds.

Regular Seeds
Next up is the Regular seeds category. Regular seeds tend to be less expensive than feminized seeds and there are a few reasons for that:

  • The process for the breeder to create Regular seeds is much simpler.

  • Regular seeds can become either male or female. Most growers want female plants and if a male plant comes from a Regular seed then you may end up tossing the plant out. The time you spent growing the plant would then be wasted.

Autoflower Seeds
The last category of cannabis seeds is Autoflower seeds. To create Autoflower seeds, growers cross a regular cannabis strain or a female cannabis strain with an Autoflower strain. Autoflowers are a type of cannabis plant that goes into flowering mode regardless of light cycle. Growing autoflower cannabis plants can be extremely useful if you’re growing outdoors and you don’t quite know how many hours of light the plant will get and when.

“Can a seed be both Regular and Autoflower or Feminized and Autoflower?”

Yes, although Regular Autoflower seeds are rare because the people who want Autoflower seeds tend to want Feminized seeds as well. There’s just not a huge demand for Regular Autoflower seeds.

“Which type of seeds do you recommend?”

If you are a beginner grower, I recommend starting out with Feminized or Regular seeds. Just to warn you though, prices vary wildly and you are going to spend probably two or three times more for Feminized seeds than you would for Regular seeds. Autoflower and Feminized Autoflower seeds may cost even more than that.
