TLDR: If clones are in 0.15 gallon pots of unbuffered (brick) coco, but are eventually getting transplanted into 5 gallon pots with CANNA coco, will the small amount of unbuffered coco cause lockout issues?
The coco ratio will be around 3% unbuffered, 97% buffered.
*The clones are currently not signaling any deficiencies, so no problems yet, but they’ve only been in the unbuffered coco for 3 days.
I was gifted some clones and didn’t have any CANNA coco on hand, so I ordered bricks from Amazon with same-day delivery and planted the clones into that coco without realizing it needed to be buffered. I did rinse the coco until the runoff was mostly clear, but did not charge with CalMag.
The clones were potted into very small pots that are only 35 cubic inches, or 0.15 gallons. Since they will ultimately end up in 5 gallon pots with CANNA coco, do I have to worry about nutrient lockout since the unbuffered coco is only going to make up around 3% of the total volume of growing medium.
My hopes are that it’ll be fine in the long run, considering the final pots will be 97% CANNA and only 3% unbuffered brick coco, but I don’t know as I’ve used strictly CANNA for 10+ years.
Clone journey:
– received as rooted clones in Jiffy Pellets (3 days ago)
– placed into 0.15 gallon pots of unbuffered coco (current status)
– transplant into 1 gallon pots of 100% CANNA coco
– final transplant into 5 gallon pots of 100% CANNA coco

If you keep the plants in coco without nutrients in it, they will eventually show signs of deficiencies. How long that takes will depend on growth. It should be fine in the long run since the other coco that you will be transplanting into is buffered.

During the transplant, I was able to knock off about half of the unbuffered coco from the root ball, so there’s barely any unbuffered coco remaining. After 2 days, Roots Excelurator had roots already showing at the bottom of the 1 gal pots. Easy peasy!
